  • Key Stage 1 Advent Activities

Sat 21 Dec 2019 Mrs MacDonald

The children in Year 1 & 2 took part in some special Advent Activities this year.
They celebrated Bambellini Sunday by making their own Bambellinis. This is an Italian tradition where families take the baby Jesus from their cribs and have them blessed by the Pope on the 3rd Sunday in Advent. Our children took their Bambellinis to Mass to be blessed and then wrapped them up and placed them under their Christmas trees. The children agreed to open this gift first, to remember the true meaning of Christmas.

Secondly, the children donated to the Christmas Book Bank Project run by Pauline Media at St Mary’s Cathedral. With their donations we were able to purchase 4 books that would be given to local children in hospitals or in need in our local parishes.

  • Salvation Army Visit

    Sat 21 Dec 2019
Neil from The Salvation Army came to school to collect the money we raised at the Nativity Performances. He was extremely grateful to accept £546 that was donated and explained to the children how the money would be used to help people in our local area. So far this winter they have made over 400 present parcels for children in our area, they have donated hundreds of food and toiletry parcels and they are cooking Christmas lunch on Christmas Day for homeless and those less fortunate.
  • Christmas Celebrations

    Thu 19 Dec 2019

On Friday 13th of December the Christmas celebrations began in earnest at St. Mary's.  Our amazing PTA organised our annual Christmas Fair and we were delighted that Santa came to visit our children - the great news is that he said all St. Mary's boys and girls are on the 'Good' list.

The celebrations continued on Tuesday 17th with our Nativity play 'Born in a Barn'.  The children from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 were fantastic, the actors delivered their lines brilliantly and the singing and dancing was excellent.  Then on Thursday 19th our older children, Year 3, 4, 5 and 6, hosted a Carol Service where they enabled the congregation to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas with some carefully chosen scripture readings and songs.  The children read and sang beautifully, it was a really uplifting service that gave us all the opportunity to be still and reflect on why Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year.  A huge thank you to our children's parents, extended families and friends for their ongoing support and for the generous donations they made to our collections at the end of the performances.  We will be donating the proceeds to the Salvation Army in North Shields to support their 'Help the Homeless' project.  Wishing you all a Christmas filled with peace, joy and many many blessings.

  • Advent Angels

    Tue 17 Dec 2019
What a fantastic response to our Advent Angels Project! This year we asked our children and families to donate toiletries and health products to families in need. The Bay Foodbank were overwhelmed by the donations and we are thankful that we could share some joy this Advent
  • Flying High at the High Five Event

    Tue 03 Dec 2019
A team of 8 St. Mary's Y6 pupils represented our school today at an inter-schools High Five Netball tournament.  We played 4 games in total of which we won 3 and drew 1.  Everyone showed great sportsmanship throughout the event and our efforts resulted in us being crowned overall High Five Champions.  We will go on to represent the Catholic Schools in the next round of the tournament.  Fantastic result, well done High Fivers!
  • Christmas Craft Workshop

    Tue 03 Dec 2019
A huge thank you to all the grown ups who came into school today to support our Nursery and Reception Class children with their Christmas Craft Workshop.  It was wonderful to see the children working happily and co-operatively with their adults making Christmas themed decorations and biscuits.  I can't wait to see all their work on display in their classrooms -Ho, Ho, Ho Merry Christmas everyone!
