  • Welcome to our new Bishop

    Fri 29 Mar 2019

On Tuesday 26th March some members of our Mini Vinnie group went to St. Mary's Cathedral for the afternoon.  There they joined schools from across the Diocese at a service to welcome our new Bishop to Hexham and Newcastle.

The singing and readings/ prayers were led by pupils from schools across the diocese.  Bishop Robert was presented with a stole which was designed by pupils in our schools and contains a number of symbols with significant importance within the Catholic Church and our Diocese and a book containing welcome messages from each school in the diocese.  The children who attended to represent our school said 'Bishop Robert seems like a very nice man who will fill Bishop Seamus' shoes extremely well.  We are glad that he has followed his call and become our Bishop'.

  • Lent

Sun 10 Mar 2019 Mrs MacDonald

During Lent, the children take on a challenge that helps them grow closer to God, through prayer, almsgiving and kindness to others.

Our Lenten Challenge this year is to give something up and collect any money saved in our Lent Cube. All monies collected will be shared between our 2 chosen charities, SVP and Cancer Research UK. Each class will also hold a cake sale to generate funds.

Our Mini Vinnies will be holding a weekly prayer group during Lent and our daily prayers will focus on reflections that draw us closer to God.

See our Lent Blog in the Newsletter section for more information

  • Reading Week at St Marys's

Fri 08 Mar 2019 Mrs MacDonald

This week has been our Reading Week at St Mary's and our focus has been to reignite our love for reading and reading for pleasure and enjoyment. The theme of our week was 'Oh the places you go ....'  and the children were encouraged to let books take them to new and wonderful places.

Throughout the week we had a range of activities for children to engage in from Reading Buddies and Book Swops to Secret Teacher Storytime and Book Tweets. Throughout the week, the children could earn reading miles for their house by reading books of their own choosing. Each class also decorated their classroom doors based on a book they were sharing that week.

On World Book Day we began the day with Breakfast with Books and our hall was packed with families reading together and enjoying a simple breakfast. During the day the children gathered in their houses to share a story and complete some fun activities around the text. It was great to see children of all ages reading together and enjoying books.

What a busy but wonderful week! Keep reading!
