Reading

Teaching our children to read and encouraging them to develop a love of reading is a key priority for us at St. Mary's.  We teach Phonics by following the Letters and Sounds phonics programme from Nursery to Year 2  this scheme teaches our children develop the skills needed to decode print using a progressive and sequential approach.  Whilst these skills are being developed we provide them with decodable books which they are expected to read independently applying the learned phonics skills.  Alongside these books we use Oxford Reading Tree as a reading scheme along with library books to offer the children the opportunity to develop and rehearse a range of reading skills such as prediction, explanation, sequencing, retrieval, and inference using a range of fiction and non fiction books that are appropriate to their age and stage of development. These books should be read by or with an adult and as children's reading skills develop they will become more adept at reading these independently.
